Understanding Hourglassing in Peyronie’s Disease
Peyronie’s disease is a condition commonly characterized by penile tethering and curvature. However, a subset of men with this condition may experience a less discussed symptom called “hourglassing,” which warrants special attention.
Hourglassing, as the name suggests, involves a visible narrowing of a portion of the penis. This narrowing can lead to two significant complications. First, patients may experience “hinging” of the penis at the narrowed area during intercourse, as poor blood flow makes this section particularly loose. Second, erectile dysfunction can occur in the portion of the penis beyond the narrowed area (distal to it) due to inadequate blood flow.
Medical professionals consider hourglassing to be a potentially serious symptom that could indicate worsening of Peyronie’s disease. For this reason, it’s crucial that patients who notice this symptom specifically mention it when consulting with their physician about their condition.
Timely medical consultation about hourglassing can be an important step in managing Peyronie’s disease effectively and preventing further complications.
