A varicocelectomy can be a very precise and important procedure, so it’s worth exploring the most technologically advanced options available. Your board-certified urologist can perform a microsurgical varicocelectomy to reduce downtime and help you achieve relief.

What are Varicoceles?

Varicoceles are enlarged veins in the scrotum that can impact fertility – they can also cause symptoms like pain that may get worse with activity or in hot weather. In some cases, they may not produce any symptoms and are only diagnosed when they interfere with fertility. Varicoceles can impact fertility because poor circulation raises the temperature of the blood and the testicles, resulting in reduced sperm production. They’re more common in men aged 15-25, although they can happen to men of any age. Varicoceles are usually caused by defective valves in the veins that prevent normal blood flow, causing it to accumulate. The result is pooling in the veins, causing them to dilate and enlarge.

Is Microsurgical Varicocelectomy Right for Me?

Varicoceles generally only need to be treated if they impact fertility or cause pain and discomfort. They’re most effectively treated with surgery, called a varicocelectomy.

What Can I Expect From a Microsurgical Varicocelectomy?

A microsurgical varicocelectomy uses an incision that is often less than one inch long. During this procedure, a board-certified urologist uses a high-powered surgical microscope to view the area up close and reduce possible trauma to the surrounding arteries, tissues, and nerves. The goal of a varicocelectomy is to redirect blood flow into other, healthy veins by blocking off the dilated ones. The biggest benefit of the microsurgical varicocelectomy is reduced downtime and pain after surgery. Overall, it can take 30-60 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, you can return home.

Microsurgical Varicocele Treatment Results and Recovery

You can generally return to office-based work within 24 hours of surgery, although you should plan to reduce your activity level for about 2-3 weeks. The microsurgical approach to varicoceles has been shown to drastically reduce the risks of fluid buildup after surgery, but your urologist can help you know what symptoms and side effects to look for. The varicocele surgery is one of the most effective ways to treat varicoceles and most men are able achieve relief from pain and reach higher fertility levels within a few months to one year of surgery.
